1993: learning the web together

Through Mackmeckarna in Malmö, I helped with early Swedish web education in 1993. Internetmuseum describes it as Sweden’s first web training. We learned alongside people from very different professions, including librarians, architects and archaeologists. The web was small enough that a newly discovered site could change our picture of what it was for.

Aftonbladet: from pages to a news flow

During Aftonbladet’s early web years, 1994–1995, I worked as a consultant on turning the paper’s existing text-TV news into an automatically updated web news flow. I built it with a small team, with Bo Hedin responsible at Aftonbladet. The initial culture-page launch, involving Mark Comerford and colleagues at JMK, was an earlier step. My part was in making the news flow work.

We used what was already there: journalists producing news, television technology and computers. A newspaper’s website could now keep moving as the news changed.

The Swedish election, 1994

For the 1994 Swedish election, results were to reach newsrooms by email. My colleagues and I at Mackmeckarna helped newspapers get the internet tools they needed to receive them. Our Internet Toolboxes included email, web and FTP servers. Much of my own implementation work happened at Aftonbladet, receiving and processing the incoming results.

Election coverage gave newsrooms a concrete reason to get connected. Once the tools were there, they could start exploring what else the internet made possible. Our work was one part of that wider rollout, alongside people including Patrik Fältström on the distribution side.

The thread I’m still following

That work continued through Helsingborgs Dagblad’s digital development, Mindpark, where I became CEO in 2007, and public-sector internet development in Helsingborg. The settings changed. The question of how new possibilities become useful in people’s lives stayed with me.

Today, that can mean a sustained learning journey with a team, a public archive, a civic proposal or a small tool that solves one ordinary problem. Strategy, implementation and learning still belong together.
